4 Dec 2009: SEPS Pharma receives € 1.5 Million grant to initiate clinical development of its lead programs
SEPS Pharma, a privately held biopharmaceutical company, announced today that it has been awarded a grant worth € 1.5 million by the Flemish agency for Innovation by Science and Technology (IWT). SEPS Pharma is a product focused company, advancing a portfolio of product opportunities with a high probability of success, based on established drugs. The company develops New Chemical Entities (NCE's) and applies superior approaches to chemically modify and deliver drugs based on its LIPRODRUG technology. This approach allows SEPS Pharma to capitalize on publicly available information, thereby lowering development risk, time and cost compared to 'traditional' NCE's, while delivering products of high value in areas of unmet need. The grant allows SEPS Pharma to accelerate the preclinical development of its pipeline and the completion of phase I for two of its lead programs. In 2009, SEPS Pharma has concluded its first in vivo studies, validating its LIPRODRUG approach. It has demonstrated in vivo that novel prodrugs of existing parent drugs can achieve the desired outcome. The first program is the conversion of a well known drug, which is currently only commercialized as an injectable, to an oral dosage form. SEPS Pharma aims to target new indications with larger patient populations. In a second program, the company develops a long-acting formulation of an antifungal agent. The goal of this new prodrug is to improve patient compliance by lowering toxicity levels and the number of administrations, as compared to the oral parent drug. Yves Gonnissen, CEO, said: "We are very pleased with IWT's continued support of SEPS Pharma's technology platform and product development. This grant will allow us to continue to develop improved delivery routes for blockbuster drugs on the market, which could result in considerable benefits for patients. Completion of phase I for two of the lead programs is a pivotal milestone for the further validation of the approach and will significantly impact on the future success of the company."
